Confessing Faith in a (non)Confessing World

5 April 2012

What does it mean to confess your beliefs? What does it mean to confess a historic document? Can this be done while also maintaining the authority if the Holy Scriptures? Does confessing faith render liberty of conscience, void? Can I be a part of a congregation if I have scruples about confessing my faith? Can a confessing church be relevant to a non-confessing world?

Most Christians would say that confessing their beliefs to others is a worthwhile activity; instructing their children, defending what they believe, and evangelizing friends and family are three sensible reasons. But many of these same Christians would be very uncomfortable expressing their faith by affirming a historic statement of faith written by Christians from ages past. Why is this?

The 2012 Spring Theology Conference of Faith Presbyterian Church (PCA) hopes to address the benefits of knowing and and affirming and confessing what we believe as we describe ourselves uniquely as, “Christians.”

We are pleased to introduce two speakers to the Faith theology talks.

Nick Batzig is the church planter of New Covenant Presbyterian, a PCA church in Richmond Hill, Georgia. He has written numerous articles for Tabletalk Magazine and Reformation 21 and is a regular contributor to ReformedForum  (learn more). Nick is a Th.M. student with Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary. Nick and Anna and their two boys live in the Savannah area.

Burk Parsons is a pastor at St. Andrew’s Church in Sanford, Florida. He is the editor of  Tabletalk Magazine as well as the editor of several books, including Assured by God: Living in the Fullness of God’s Grace and John Calvin: A Heart for Devotion, Doctrine, and Doxology. Burk has recently published a short volume in the Basics of the Faith series called, Why Do We Have Creeds? (learn more). Burk and Amber and their children live in central Florida.

All meetings take place at All Saints’ Episcopal, downtown Anchorage [map]. There is no charge for any of the talks.

~ Conference Schedule

Friday, May 11
On Day One of the Spring Theology Conference, from 7:00pm to 8:30pm Burk Parsons will give two talks. Afterwards, Burk and Nick will moderate a Q&A session, followed by light refreshments.

Talk 1 | Doctrine is Life: Doctrine isn’t just one small aspect of life, it is foundational to all of life. Doctrine naturally encompasses every area of life, and we cannot relegate it, keep it in its place, or ignore its effects in every area of our lives.
Talk 2 | Everyone Has a Confession: Although some might say, “My only creed is Christ,” the truth is that even their statement itself is a type of creed. Every Christian and every church has a creed, whether it’s an unchanging formally written creed of the church or a constantly changing creed of an individual, everyone has some sort of creed or confession.

Saturday, May 12
On Day Two of the Spring Theology Conference, from 9:30am to 11:30am, John Jones and Nick Batzig will give two talks followed by a Q&A session. At 11:30am, lunch will be provided at All Saints’ for all those who are interested, or you may wish to try one of the many downtown restaurants. From 12:30pm to 2:30pm, Nick will give two more talks followed by a Q&A session.

The Nature and Role of Articulating Belief
Talk 2: Everything in It’s Place, Nick Batzig
The Importance of Systematic Theology in the Confession
