Spring Theology Conference, 2012

17 February 2012

Details are still coming together for the Spring Theology Conference (see below). Our topic for this conference will concern the nature of confessing our Protestant Christian faith using historic documents. As a congregation, all of the leaders at Faith are required to subscribe to a few historic Protestant confessions of faith (see them here); inevitably, many of our ministries and the ways in which we envision the foundations of our church are also related to these confessions. The working title of the conference is, “Confessing faith in a non-confessing world.”

Some of the questions that we’ll engage include: What does it mean to confess a historic document? How does this square-up with the authority if the Holy Scriptures? Does this habit render a congregation irrelevant to the world? How can I be a part of a congregation if I have scruples about its confession of faith? Isn’t liberty of conscience an important feature of Protestantism?

Speakers: We’ve invited a young PCA church planter, Nick Batzig, and an author and editor (Tabletalk Magazine), Burk Parsons.

Dates: Friday, May 11 and Saturday, May 12, 2012.

Format: On Friday night, from 7:00pm to 9:00pm, there will be two talks followed by a Q&A and refreshments. On Saturday, there will be two sessions from 9:30am to 11:30am, a hosted lunch, followed by two more sessions (plus Q&A) from 12:30pm to 2:30pm.

Please mark these days on your calendar. And also stay tuned for more information regarding location, the titles of specific talks, opportunities to socialize with our speakers, childcare details, etc.

Bible Reading plans (redux)

11 February 2012

In a post about acquiring theological knowledge, I suggested using Bible reading plans as a way to keep on track with personal Bible reading. I still think that Justin Taylor does a good job of organizing the best reading lists in one place. Here are his 2012 suggestions.

As for my personal recommendation, I would suggest any reading plan that gets you in both the Old and New Testament each day and, preferably, more than one genre of biblical literature each day (poetry and prose, prophetic and epistolary, etc.).

For this reason I favor the reading plan by pastor Robert Murray M’Cheyne which was originally penned in 1842 about three months before his death. You can find the plan here, and you can also buy a handy bookmark-sized copy through Monergism Books. D. A. Carson has published a devotional guide using the reading plan (see For the Love of God, vol. 1, vol. 2), but I don’t quite see the point when the main focus is spending time in God’s Word.

Though not for the faint-of-heart, I began Grant Horner’s plan as a means of mixing things up. Grant is a professor of humanities at The Master’s College. The reading plan has become so popular, it has given birth to its own Facebook page (not sure what to think of this).

Watch “What is Reformed Theology?”

2 February 2012

Ligonier has just made available, for free viewing, Sproul’s lectures on the basics of Reformed theology. In 1997, these talks were published in a book, What is Reformed Theology? I believe that this book, along with William Edgar’s, Truth in All Its Glory, are the two best introductions to Reformed theology in print.

So, I am very pleased that these lectures by Sproul that are the basis for the book are available for free. You can view the introductory lecture here.
